Stephen LANHAM, was born 28 May 1726, in Prince Georges County, Maryland, a son of Thomas and Sarah (maiden name unknown) Lanham, and married (1) Leah (maiden name unknown), and (2) Susannah (maiden name unknown) [1], born about 1730.

Note
There is speculation that Leah may have been Leah BEALL. More research needed.

Stephen and Leah lived on a plantation, northeast of present day Washington, D.C., known as ―Mizpah / Misph‖ [2]

This was part of the estate of William Beall’s 500 hundreds acres called “William and Elizabeth”, plus 125 acres of vacant land adjoined to the 118 acres bought from Wm Beall. [2] The land being located in both Prince Georges County and Fredrick County. This portion of Fredrick County was later changed to Montgomery County. Portions of the plantation was probably the present day site of the Naval Base at White Oak.

On 7 Nov. 1766, Stephen and Leah convey to Elisha Hosinson, 53 ¾ acres, part of the tract called “ Mizpah”. [3]

Stephen is also mentioned 29 Aug 1777, mustered, 7th Company, Lower Battalion, Montgomery County, Militia. [4]

Stephen Lanham (Lenham) of Prince Georges Co. Maryland served in Capt. Samuel Magruder‘s Co., Colonial Wars.

During the Revolutionary War Stephen signed the Oath of Fidelity in Montgomery Co., and is listed in 1778 as Stephen Lanum [4].

Stephen is also listed in the DAR ―Patriots‖ Index for Patriotic Service.

Stephen is mentioned in a 1780 bill of sale [5].
