Figure 1. John Lanham Family Tree

John Lanham was born 18 May 1661, in Wortham, Suffolk County, England, a son of Jonathan and Mary (Marsh) Lanham of Redgrave, Suffolk County, England. [1]

John Lanham landed in Port Tobacco, Charles County, Maryland, May 1678, he came to Maryland as an importation of Col. Benjamin Roser, in the ship Dover of London, Capt. John Harris, Commander. John had been the servent of Michael Ashford. [2]

He paid for his passage by being an indentured servant for five years. Not much is known about John Lanham. He was called the founder of the so-called "Piscataway" Lanhams. In 1697 John Lanham secured the A brand for himself, his sons, and their livestock.

Caution
I had originally and incorrectly listed Dorthy Burch as the wife of John Lanham (b. 1661) for many years. I have been challenged on that to show evidence and I have none so far. My earlier data was based on another person’s family history about which I have verified no data.[3] There may be evidence he married a SHAW.

John married UNKNOWN in 1689. There is no record of death of John in Prince George County, Maryland. Records indicate that they had at least four sons: John Jr. (b. abt. 1690), Thomas Lanham (b. abt. 1695), Richard (b. abt. 1697), and William (b. abt. 1699).

While no one document has been found ( yet) listing all of John and wife’s children, there may be indications that a Ralph Lanham may have been child of John. [4]

John Lanham appears before the Nov. 1697 court with three sons: John, Richard, and Thomas and recorded their marks for cattle and hogs that were grazing on common ground and mixed with others. There are numerous accounts of John Lannam in the Prince George County, Maryland (1696-1699) court records i.e. 1696: p 57,58; 1697, p 283; 1698, p 350, 432,436. In a deposition of 8 June 1725 he gave his age as 65.
